Or, worse, you press a letter on the right side of the keyboard and a number appears. If this is happening, the keyboard isn't broken: it's malfunctioning. misconfigured<\/strong>. In the vast majority of cases, the problem lies in the language settings, layout, or the Num Lock key being accidentally activated\u2014and all of these can be resolved in a few minutes, without installing anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Identifying the keyboard problem<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Symptom 1: Letters turn into numbers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    If your symptom is number 1, the fix is usually a simple keystroke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Locating the Num Lock key<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    On full desktop keyboards, the key is located just above the numeric keypad on the right, with the name Num Lock<\/em> or NumLk<\/em>, There's usually a light indicating if it's on. Press it once and test the typing. If the light goes out and the letters return to normal, the problem is solved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Using Fn + Num Lock on laptops<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    On compact laptops, the function is usually printed in a different color on another key \u2014 often the F11<\/em>, The Scroll Lock<\/em>, The Insert<\/em> or the key itself Num Lk<\/em> in the corner.     Disabling Num Lock using the virtual keyboard<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    The Windows virtual keyboard is an on-screen copy of the keyboard, controlled by the mouse. It's useful precisely when the physical keyboard isn't cooperating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Opening the virtual keyboard in Windows<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    The fastest way works in both versions: press the keys Windows + Ctrl + O<\/em>. If you prefer the menu, go to Settings<\/strong> and then in Accessibility<\/strong> (called \u201cEase of Access\u201d in Windows 10), open the section Keyboard<\/strong> and activate the option Virtual Keyboard<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Displaying the numeric block<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    With the virtual keyboard open, click on Options<\/strong> and check the box Activate numeric keypad<\/em>. The block of numbers appears on the right side of the window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Turning off Num Lock<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    Click the key NumLock<\/strong> This block functions like a switch: if it was on, it turns off. Test typing on the physical keyboard immediately afterward. Once resolved, you can close the virtual keyboard normally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Checking the language and keyboard layout<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    If your symptom is number 2 \u2014 incorrect accents and \u201c\u00e7\u201d \u2014 the problem lies in the layout. It's worth understanding the difference between two concepts that Windows treats separately: the display language<\/em> (the language of menus) and the keyboard layout<\/em> (The map shows which key produces which character). You can have Windows in Portuguese and still have the American layout active.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    In Brazil, keyboards sold with their own "\u00e7" key follow the standard. ABNT2<\/strong>. Imported keyboards, even those with the Portuguese operating system, are usually of the US International standard. Choosing the wrong layout is what causes quotation marks to become accents and the "\u00e7" to disappear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Rule of thumb: if your keyboard has the \u201c\u00e7\u201d key engraved on it, choose ABNT2. If not, choose \u201cPortuguese (Brazil) \u2014 United States International\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

    How to change the language and layout in Windows 10 and 11<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Step by step<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    1. Open Settings:<\/em> Click the Start menu and choose Settings (or press Windows + I<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2. Go to \u201cTime and language\u201d:<\/em> then open the section Language and region<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    3. Locate the Portuguese (Brazil) language:<\/em> Click on the three dots next to it and choose Language options<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    4. Adjust the installed keyboards:<\/em> In the list of keyboards, add Portuguese (Brazil) ABNT2<\/strong> If it's not there, remove the layouts you don't use \u2014 especially "United States - QWERTY," which is often the culprit for taking over on its own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    5. Test:<\/em> Open Notepad and type \u00e7, ~, ^ and the quotation marks. If they come out correctly, the problem is solved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The shortcut that causes the problem.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    One detail that resolves many recurring issues: when more than one layout is installed, Windows switches between them with... Left Alt + Shift<\/em> or Windows + Spacebar<\/em>. It's extremely easy to accidentally trigger this while typing.
